Why do you cough at night?

I will tell you five reasons why you might cough at night. First of all, gastritis is acidity. When you have acidity, all that acid comes up from the stomach and can go into your respiratory tract, which causes you to cough at night. This is very common. People often overlook the fact that one of their biggest problems is that they cough repeatedly, especially when lying down at night. The main reason for this is gastritis.

The second is obstructive sleep apnea. Sometimes it happens that if you are overweight or obese, these muscles that are tight in your neck become loose at night, and because of this, they put a little pressure on the respiratory tract. Because of this, sometimes secretions, etc., move back and forth, and because of this, choking episodes occur. It seems like this.  It feels like someone has blocked your breathing, and you have to wake up at night, and sometimes you also cough.

Thirdly, post-nasal drip is a very common problem if someone has allergies in the nose. Due to nasal allergies, there is inflammation in the back of the nose, and at night when you are sleeping, some secretions come out from the inflammation and they go into your throat, which causes you to cough.

Fourthly, there are some medications that can cause coughing. There is a special blood pressure medication called an ACE inhibitor or Rembri, and similar medications that can make you cough.

Fifthly, asthma is also a common cause of cough in people with asthma. I am talking about a dry cough. If your breath also becomes shallow and there is a whistling sound coming from your chest when you breathe, and you also cough at night or during the day,  If you also have it, then it may be an asthma problem. Apart from this, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) is a big reason for cough, which is a constant cough that lasts for a long time, and sometimes mucus is also produced.

This happens in people who are smokers, smoke a lot of cigarettes, or live in an area where there is a lot of smoke and pollution,n etc., or there are people who smoke around them. These people may have COPD. There are very rare chances, but sometimes a cough can also occur due to lung cancer. Sometimes a cough can also occur due to infection. But a cough that occurs due to infection, especially bacterial infection, produces mucus. Most of the time, the mucus is green and accompanied by fever. The patient feels unwell.

Finally

Nighttime coughing can be more than just a nuisance—it’s often a sign that something in your body needs attention. Whether it’s triggered by postnasal drip, asthma, acid reflux, or even allergies, understanding the root cause is key to finding relief. Environmental factors like dry air or irritants can also play a role. If your nighttime cough persists for more than a few weeks, worsens, or is accompanied by other symptoms like wheezing or fever, it’s important to consult a healthcare professional. By identifying the cause and taking appropriate steps—such as using a humidifier, elevating your head while sleeping, or treating underlying conditions—you can reduce or even eliminate those sleepless, cough-filled nights.
